<p>« <em>C’est grâce à l’hébergement en famille que j’ai appris à parler un peu arabe</em> », lance Anne-Catherine, la coordinatrice de l’antenne brabançonne de BelRefugees, la plateforme citoyenne de soutien aux réfugiés. En l’espace de quelques années, l’hébergeuse a ouvert sa maison et son cœur à un millier de personnes.</p>\n

<p>Son engagement, elle le doit entre autres à la colère. « <em>La plateforme est née en 2015, suite à la mauvaise gestion de l’accueil des exilés en Belgique. Notre pays a mis des familles avec enfants à la rue. Héberger m’a beaucoup apaisée. Très vite, avec d’autres personnes, on a commencé à informer les migrants sur les procédures de demande d’asile, à leur trouver des avocats, etc. L’État belge a été condamné des milliers de fois pour n’avoir pas respecté le droit d’asile. À un moment, j’ai estimé que l’hébergement, ce n’était plus suffisant.</em> »</p>\n

<p>Anne-Catherine, l’une des deux salariées de l’antenne, décide donc de concrétiser une idée qui prend de plus en plus de place dans son esprit : ouvrir un café. « <em>En hébergeant, je me suis rendu compte qu’un lien se tissait quasiment instantanément avec les gens. C’est fou : ils arrivent et tu commences à les aimer, sans savoir pourquoi. Et comme tout le monde ne peut pas héberger, je voulais créer un lieu où citoyens belges et exilés pourraient simplement être humains ensemble.</em> »</p>\n

<p>Au contact des populations migrantes, l’hébergeuse s’aperçoit que l’isolement des déraciné·es est sciemment organisé par l’État. « <em>On les parque dans des centres parfois très éloignés des centres-villes. J’ai rencontré des exilés qui étaient ici depuis dix ans et qui n’étaient jamais entrés dans une maison de Belges.</em> »</p>\n

<p>Le Café Monde a poussé son premier cri le 23 juin 2023. Depuis lors, il règne à Louvain-la-Neuve une odeur de solidarité. Aujourd’hui, l’équipe a mitonné un humus de Gaza, un gratin d’aubergines de Palestine, une salade du Pérou, des lentilles d’Érythrée, du Geema du Tchad et un gâteau aux poires de Belgique.</p>\n

<p>« <em>J’avais envie d’avoir un endroit où on pouvait aussi organiser des activités structurées. On a donc fondé l’École Sans Frontières, où vingt heures de cours sont assurées toutes les semaines par des bénévoles. En semaine, il y a aussi la “chill afternoon”, c’est-à-dire des après-midi jeux de société. On a ensuite ouvert une permanence sociale, une consultation psychologique, une consultation juridique et un ciné-club pour sensibiliser aux enjeux migratoires.</em> »</p>\n

<p>En offrant de tels services, rendus possibles grâce aux bénévoles et aux dons, cette initiative pallie les manquements de l’État. Et offre une halte réconfortante à des personnes épuisées et meurtries à un point difficilement imaginable pour celles et ceux qui n’ont pas connu l’exode. Au Café Monde, elles savent qu’elles peuvent déposer leurs bagages les plus lourds.</p>\n

<p>« <em>Le fait que cet endroit soit un café change tout. Quand je travaille ici sur mon ordinateur, on vient parfois me trouver pour m’expliquer une situation compliquée. La nourriture est un prétexte pour (ré)apprendre l’altérité. « <em>Si tu partages vraiment un repas ou même un café avec un inconnu, normalement à la fin, ce n’est plus un inconnu.</em> »</p>\n

Ce qui n’est pas sans conséquence : « <em>Au début, on a essayé de composer les menus avec les invendus d’un magasin bio. Mais devoir se retrouver à cuisiner pour 40 personnes </em><em>avec trois betteraves, c’était pas possible. Il y a des choses qu’on voudrait faire, mais qui invalideraient le projet. Très vite, avec d’autres personnes, on a commencé à informer les migrants sur les procédures de demande d’asile, à leur trouver des avocats, etc. L’État belge a été condamné des milliers de fois pour n’avoir pas respecté le droit d’asile. <p>Anne-Catherine, l’une des deux salariées de l’antenne, décide donc de concrétiser une idée qui prend de plus en plus de place dans son esprit : ouvrir un café. « <em>En hébergeant, je me suis rendu compte qu’un lien se tissait quasiment instantanément avec les gens. C’est fou : ils arrivent et tu commences à les aimer, sans savoir pourquoi. <p>Au contact des populations migrantes, l’hébergeuse s’aperçoit que l’isolement des déraciné·es est sciemment organisé par l’État. « <em>On les parque dans des centres parfois très éloignés des centres-villes. J’ai rencontré des exilés qui étaient ici depuis dix ans et qui n’étaient jamais entrés dans une maison de Belges.</em> »</p>\n

<p>Le Café Monde a poussé son premier cri le 23 juin 2023. Depuis lors, il règne à Louvain-la-Neuve une odeur de solidarité. Aujourd’hui, l’équipe a mitonné un humus de Gaza, un gratin d’aubergines de Palestine, une salade du Pérou, des lentilles d’Érythrée, du Geema du Tchad et un gâteau aux poires de Belgique.</p>\n

<p>« <em>J’avais envie d’avoir un endroit où on pouvait aussi organiser des activités structurées. On a donc fondé l’École Sans Frontières, où vingt heures de cours sont assurées toutes les semaines par des bénévoles. En semaine, il y a aussi la “chill afternoon”, c’est-à-dire des après-midi jeux de société. On a ensuite ouvert une permanence sociale, une consultation psychologique, une consultation juridique et un ciné-club pour sensibiliser aux enjeux migratoires.</em> »</p>\n

<p>En offrant de tels services, rendus possibles grâce aux bénévoles et aux dons, cette initiative pallie les manquements de l’État. Et offre une halte réconfortante à des personnes épuisées et meurtries à un point difficilement imaginable pour celles et ceux qui n’ont pas connu l’exode. Au Café Monde, elles savent qu’elles peuvent déposer leurs bagages les plus lourds.</p>\n

<p>« <em>Le fait que cet endroit soit un café change tout. Quand je travaille ici sur mon ordinateur, on vient parfois me trouver pour m’expliquer une situation compliquée. Le côté informel est très rassurant.</em> » À l’évidence, ce lieu est davantage un outil de soutien qu’un <em>coffee shop</em>. La nourriture est un prétexte pour (ré)apprendre l’altérité. « <em>Si tu partages vraiment un repas ou même un café avec un inconnu, normalement à la fin, ce n’est plus un inconnu.</em> »</p>\n

<p>Les plats préparés ici sont entièrement végétariens et à prix libre, sans justification. Ce qui n’est pas sans conséquence : « <em>Au début, on a essayé de composer les menus avec les invendus d’un magasin bio. Mais devoir se retrouver à cuisiner pour 40 personnes </em><em>avec trois betteraves, c’était pas possible. Il y a des choses qu’on voudrait faire, mais qui invalideraient le projet. Alors, on fait des compromis</em> », admet en toute franchise Anne-Catherine.</p>\n
