<p>Née en 1973, Fraternités Ouvrières promeut le jardinage en permaculture, le partage du savoir sur l’agroforesterie et l’utilisation de semence paysannes. À l’époque, elle permettait aux ouvriers du textile de venir profiter du jardin, et de développer leur autonomie alimentaire alors que, dans la région, l’industrie était en pleine crise. La philosophie ? Elle n’a pas changé : « <em>Ici, tout le monde vient comme il veut. On s’en fiche de ton métier, de qui tu es, tu seras d’office le bienvenu </em>», explique Michel Vanhulle, bénévole depuis 40 ans.</p>\n

<p>À l’origine de l’association, Gilbert et Josine Cardon. Le célèbre couple lui ouvre gratuitement sa maison et son jardin, au numéro 58 de la rue Charles-Quint, à Mouscron. Le décès de Gilbert en 2020 et le déménagement de Josine en maison de repos voici un peu plus de trois ans ont changé la donne. Le bail arrive à échéance en octobre 2026. Devenus propriétaires, les enfants souhaitent vendre le bien. « <em>C’est tout à fait normal, on ne leur en veut pas du tout</em>, affirme Michel. <em>C’est leur héritage et, d’ailleurs, ils aimeraient vraiment que l’on puisse l’acheter. </em>»</p>\n

<p>Depuis sa création, l’association a grandi, à l’image de l’énorme grainothèque, composée presque exclusivement de semences paysannes reproductibles. « <em>En 1976, notre catalogue, ce n’était qu’une page recto-verso</em>, observe Michel en feuilletant l’imposante farde. <em>Aujourd’hui, on est à plus de 80 pages. </em>» Les lieux abritent ainsi plus de 5.000 variétés de légumes et de fleurs. Et contrairement aux semences produites par l’agro-industrie, il s’agit de graines reproductibles, libres de droits et plus robustes car mieux adaptées aux spécificités des territoires où elles sont semées.</p>\n

<p> « <em>Pour qu’on puisse avoir tout ce choix, je suis obligée de passer par au moins cinq semenciers différents, comme Kokopelli ou Semailles</em> », détaille Monique. Quand les commandes arrivent, les graines sont réparties dans des emballages fabriqués par les petites mains des bénévoles à partir d’enveloppes déjà utilisées. Leur prix oscille généralement entre quelques cents et un euro. Pour pouvoir profiter de ces bonnes affaires, il faut être membre. « <em>Tout le monde peut le devenir, à condition de s’acquitter d’une cotisation annuelle de cinq euros </em>», développe Michel.</p>\n

<p>Outre la grainothèque, l’ASBL organise des cours de jardinage un dimanche par mois. « <em>On est sur des conseils pratiques, on répond aux questions</em>, observe encore le bénévole<em>. Et c’est gratuit</em>. <em>C’est important, le savoir doit être accessible à tout le monde. »</em></p>\n

<p>C’est derrière une vieille porte en bois, au fond de la salle de réunion, que se cache le cœur des Fraternités Ouvrières : un jardin-forêt de. Près de 2 ha. Il abrite des plantes parfois surprenantes. « <em>Regarde : ça, c’est un kiwi, </em>s’exclame Michel. <em>Les gens sont étonnés quand on leur dit qu’on peut en faire pousser en Belgique. </em>»</p>\n

<p>Le Mouscronnois avance dans « la jungle » d’une démarche assurée. Il en connaît tous les recoins : la mare, les arbres, les tas de bois. « <em>C’est ouvert aux visiteurs tous les jeudis. Et incroyable : on a des gens qui viennent des quatre coins du monde </em>», s’émerveille-t-il.</p>\n

<p>Née en 1973, Fraternités Ouvrières promeut le jardinage en permaculture, le partage du savoir sur l’agroforesterie et l’utilisation de semence paysannes. À l’époque, elle permettait aux ouvriers du textile de venir profiter du jardin, et de développer leur autonomie alimentaire alors que, dans la région, l’industrie était en pleine crise. La philosophie ? Elle n’a pas changé : « <em>Ici, tout le monde vient comme il veut. On s’en fiche de ton métier, de qui tu es, tu seras d’office le bienvenu </em>», explique Michel Vanhulle, bénévole depuis 40 ans.</p>\n

<p>À l’origine de l’association, Gilbert et Josine Cardon. Le célèbre couple lui ouvre gratuitement sa maison et son jardin, au numéro 58 de la rue Charles-Quint, à Mouscron. Le décès de Gilbert en 2020 et le déménagement de Josine en maison de repos voici un peu plus de trois ans ont changé la donne. Le bail arrive à échéance en octobre 2026. Devenus propriétaires, les enfants souhaitent vendre le bien. « <em>C’est tout à fait normal, on ne leur en veut pas du tout</em>, affirme Michel. <em>C’est leur héritage et, d’ailleurs, ils aimeraient vraiment que l’on puisse l’acheter. </em>»</p>\n

<p>Depuis sa création, l’association a grandi, à l’image de l’énorme grainothèque, composée presque exclusivement de semences paysannes reproductibles. « <em>En 1976, notre catalogue, ce n’était qu’une page recto-verso</em>, observe Michel en feuilletant l’imposante farde. <em>Aujourd’hui, on est à plus de 80 pages. </em>» Les lieux abritent ainsi plus de 5.000 variétés de légumes et de fleurs. Et contrairement aux semences produites par l’agro-industrie, il s’agit de graines reproductibles, libres de droits et plus robustes car mieux adaptées aux spécificités des territoires où elles sont semées.</p>\n

<p> « <em>Pour qu’on puisse avoir tout ce choix, je suis obligée de passer par au moins cinq semenciers différents, comme Kokopelli ou Semailles</em> », détaille Monique. Quand les commandes arrivent, les graines sont réparties dans des emballages fabriqués par les petites mains des bénévoles à partir d’enveloppes déjà utilisées. Leur prix oscille généralement entre quelques cents et un euro. Pour pouvoir profiter de ces bonnes affaires, il faut être membre. « <em>Tout le monde peut le devenir, à condition de s’acquitter d’une cotisation annuelle de cinq euros </em>», développe Michel.</p>\n

<p>Outre la grainothèque, l’ASBL organise des cours de jardinage un dimanche par mois. « <em>On est sur des conseils pratiques, on répond aux questions</em>, observe encore le bénévole<em>. Et c’est gratuit</em>. <em>C’est important, le savoir doit être accessible à tout le monde. »</em></p>\n

<p>C’est derrière une vieille porte en bois, au fond de la salle de réunion, que se cache le cœur des Fraternités Ouvrières : un jardin-forêt de. Près de 2 ha. Il abrite des plantes parfois surprenantes. « <em>Regarde : ça, c’est un kiwi, </em>s’exclame Michel. <em>Les gens sont étonnés quand on leur dit qu’on peut en faire pousser en Belgique. </em>»</p>\n

<p>Le Mouscronnois avance dans « la jungle » d’une démarche assurée. Il en connaît tous les recoins : la mare, les arbres, les tas de bois. « <em>C’est ouvert aux visiteurs tous les jeudis. Et incroyable : on a des gens qui viennent des quatre coins du monde </em>», s’émerveille-t-il.</p>\n

<p>Chaque semaine, les bénévoles se retroussent les manches pour entretenir cette forêt. « <em>On est environ un millier à payer des cotisations chaque année.
